St Joseph of Calasanz – Jover

This is a portrait of Saint Joseph of Calasanz, Spanish priest and Patron Saint of Catholic schools. In 1597, he opened the first public free school in Rome and in all of Europe, teaching poor and homeless children. This effort led to his founding of the religious  order of the Piarists. Artwork by Jover.
